The Hecklinski Family: A Legacy of Resilience, Leadership, and Advocacy
A Foundation Built on Football and Family
Jeff and Tiffany Hecklinski's journey is deeply rooted in the world of collegiate football. Jeff, a seasoned coach with over two decades of experience, has held prominent positions at institutions like San Diego State University and the University of Michigan. Tiffany, the daughter of a college football coach, understands the demands and dynamics of the sport. Together, they've navigated the challenges of coaching careers, relocations, and raising a family, all while maintaining a strong partnership.
Confronting a Life-Altering Diagnosis
In 2010, amidst a bustling football season at San Diego State, Tiffany began experiencing persistent pain in her side. Initially dismissed as minor, the discomfort escalated. By 2011, while Jeff was coaching at the University of Michigan, Tiffany sought medical attention at an urgent care facility in Ann Arbor. An MRI revealed a significant mass, leading to immediate surgery. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer at just 37 years old, despite having no family history of the disease.
The diagnosis was a profound shock. As a mother of three and a dedicated professional, Tiffany faced the daunting reality of a serious illness. The Hecklinski family's resilience was tested, but their unity and determination became their strength.
The Power of Community and Support
Navigating cancer treatment far from extended family, the Hecklinski’s found solace in their football community. Fellow coaches' families, notably Laura Hoke, provided unwavering support, assisting with appointments and daily needs. Jeff balanced his coaching responsibilities with caregiving, often preparing meals and ensuring Tiffany's comfort during her recovery. Their shared commitment, along with the backing of their community, played a pivotal role in Tiffany's journey to remission.
A Decade of Advocacy and Empowerment
Now celebrating over a decade cancer-free, Tiffany has transformed her experience into a mission of advocacy. She actively promotes awareness about colorectal cancer, emphasizing the importance of early detection and regular screenings. Her story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the significance of listening to one's body and seeking timely medical advice.
Through public speaking engagements and community involvement, Tiffany aims to educate others about the realities of cancer and the importance of support systems. Her journey highlights the transformative power of resilience, love, and community in overcoming life's challenges.
Continuing the Journey Together
The Hecklinski family's story is one of perseverance, unity, and transformation. Their experiences have not only strengthened their bond but have also empowered them to make a difference in the lives of others. As they continue their journey, they remain committed to sharing their story, fostering awareness, and inspiring hope.
The Next Chapter: Purpose-Filled Family
Since her diagnosis, Tiffany has not only triumphed over cancer but also gone on to earn her Ph.D. in Medical Communication and now serves as the Co-Founder and COO of Exalt Clinical Research in Chula Vista, California. Her resilience and drive are mirrored in their children: Riley, a former collegiate softball player at Indiana University and Indiana State, graduated in just three years and launched a career in football—first with the Cleveland Browns, where she rose to coordinator of coaching operations, and now serves as Director of Player Engagement/Coaching Operations with Texas A&M Football. Mikey is a junior at McKendree University, a left-handed pitcher studying Kinesiology with aspirations to become a strength coach. JR, the youngest, is a freshman offensive lineman at New Mexico State, majoring in Criminal Justice and continuing the family legacy of grit and determination.
